Writing is an adventure. To begin with, it is a toy and an amusement. Then it becomes a mistress, then it becomes a master, then it becomes a tyrant. The last phase is that just as you are about to be reconciled to your servitude, you kill the monster and fling him to the public.

— Winston Churchill

Big Lessons From Little Faces

Three trips in 12 months to the jacked-out kids’ dentistry place where walls are covered in animal murals and child-friendly assistants dispense toys, and my little guy finally acquiesced. His petite face was furrowed and squished with anxiety as he opened wide. A bump of nervous energy on a long blue chair, his every-girl-would-be-jealous eyelashes held back the cascade forming behind them, and along with a little toothpaste and water, he swallowed his fear.

I wish I had brought a camera so I could show you how brilliantly his eyes shone and his smile beamed with accomplishment when after a thorough cleaning, he jumped from his chair, threw his arms around me and proclaimed himself braver than a superhero.

Every day—every single day—he inspires me.
