Wondering On Wednesday: What Advice Did You Ignore?
When I was a pre-teen, my mom started talking to me about the importance of skin care as preventative maintenance. She provided lessons, shared her products, purchased for me a whole regimen of my very own; she encouraged all kinds of good habits and the development of night-time and early-morning routines. She did all of this in the hope that one day I’d not look in the mirror and complain that my my neck is beginning to resemble that of a chicken.

I’m not a ‘product’ kind of gal and my approach to skin care has been wash-and-go. I’ve never found a moisturizer I like and because I was gifted with my mom’s soft skin, I just assumed I’d ride this genetic lottery bonanza until I was at least 50. Well, apparently mom knew what she was talking about and she’s had a little help over the years from royal jelly or some such thing. I wasn’t paying enough attention when she rattled on and on about how I was supposed to dab a little here and dot a little there. The older I get, the younger she looks. My neck, yup, it’s starting to cackle.
I’m wondering on Wednesday—what little piece of motherly advice do you wish you’d heeded?

Is it Wednesday already?

Also a skin thing – my Mother seemed to know about sun damage to the skin long before it was common knowledge. When my friends and I were slathering on the baby oil and using sun reflectors to catch the searing rays of sunshine May through August, my Mom was warning us of future problems with skin cancer.
I’ve been very lucky so far, despite a ridiculous, blistering sunburn I inflicted upon myself one day in the Bahamas and several significant burns through my teen years and early twenties. Now my skin just looks older than it should. I’ll see your chicken neck, and raise you one dumb turkey.

I was asking the same thing, what day is today, could it be Wednesday?
Your wonderful husband, of course, probably would say this, I’m sure: you’re always beautiful.

Be careful what you wish for is something my mom always use to say. Still does, actually. And I wish I had listened to that earlier in life. It may have saved me some heartache.

My hometown is the home of a major state university. I grew up thinking it was the ONLY place to go to college. My parents wanted me to go to the much smaller state school a couple hours away. The much smaller school wanted me, too. I was hellbent on going to the Big U. My parents let me decide…and I quit before I flunked out because (I know now) it just wasn’t the right place for me. 25 years later, I have yet to complete my degree and I know that I am working wayyyyy below my ability. If I’d listened to my mother, I might be starring in a fabulous hit Broadway show right now instead of slogging away at a desk job…at the Big U. Irony, you are my friend.

I’m with Amy – is it Wednesday already?
In my case, it would be more appropriate to ask what did my mother tell me that I ever listened to?
The list would be shorter, anyway.

Do you all know it took me a full five hours since waking up this morning to realize it’s not Wednesday!!!
Having not grown up with a mother to give advice, I missed it all. But I sure wish someone would have told me to stay out of the sun because I’m a red head, fair complexion and blue eyed…….you can imagine what the sun does to me. Ugh……..my dermatologist whom I see at least 4 times a year, is making a fortune from burning and cutting off suspicious spots.

Just think of all the good habits you could have if only you had listened to your mother. But we all do it. Mine did not teach me the beauty of all thoese creams. I always wondered why you started cackeling like an old hen. Now I know.
So Wondering on Wednesday are we going to have the privelege of another wondering story tomorrow?
XOXOX
my mother…not too big in the advice department. She was a master of the cold war and the Queen of Passive Agressive, so i spent a lot of time on the receiving end of the stony silence as she was always pissed at me about something. I’m sure i was switched at birth…and she would probably agree

HILARIOUS! Must be something in the air… a client of mine thought it was Wed too! Maybe we all need to slow down and smell the roses… or at least a good bottle of face cream!!! LOVE YOU!!!
My mom’s never really been one for advice. She’s a very meek and quiet person. A friend of mine though who’s about ten years older told me when I was 22 that it’s never too soon to start using a good eye cream. And I listened!

Ohhhhh, all of it. I loved her dearly but when it came to advice, I thought she didn’t have a clue. Of course, now I wish I could ask her advice on everything. The arrogance of youth.

I wish that I had listened to her more when it came to worrying too much about what others think. Yep…even still I care too much what she thinks.

Thistle and I have the same mom (we discovered this already and cannot figure out how she had two lives in two separate countries).
My neck is cackling too. My sister, older by four years, has wonderful skin. She uses Clarin products. I started but it might be too late for me.

My Mom still advises me that the internet is EVIL (as are computers). I love her to death but, well, you know.

“THAT HAIR COLOR MAY SAY SEMI-PERMANENT BUT THAT IS NEVER GOING TO WASH OUT OF YOUR HAIR!” she said, right before I decided to turn my blonde hair black.
I came home the following day from school to find 3 shades of blonde hair color lined up on the kitchen table and was ordered to “pick one.”
It took me a good 3 years for my hair to resemble any color appearing in nature.
