Bottoms Up

I’ve been struggling with a problematic back that’s put the screws on my normal exercise routine for the last year. My doctor recently recommended swimming, and I dove into a water aerobics class. It’s been fun and I’m starting to feel a little stronger, but something happened today that added an unexpected element of laughter therapy to my workout.

We had a substitute instructor who normally teaches yoga, and she teaches classes to people who have their feet firmly planted on dry ground. You can probably see where this is headed, right?

She decided we needed to do some yoga—in the water. OK. Fine. Reach, inhale, exhale, stretch, “This is feeling pretty good,” I thought. Our next move, she wanted us to bend from the waist and touch our hands to the floor of the pool. Big gulp of air, hold my breath, bend over and reach, reach, reach. I’d have no problem doing this on dry land, but apparently all that late-night ice cream has made my bum buoyant.

Every time I’d bend in half, stick my head under the water and reach for my toes, my bum would pop right up to the surface and I’d start floating. Frustrating, yes, but it’s the only time my bum has EVER felt like a feather weight. Water Yoga anyone?

The Young One, who is 13 and about to start 8th grade, enlightened me with a couple of scientific facts recently.

Very thin people are apt to weather a blizzard better than those of a larger body size, while those of a larger body size would be less likely to drown if their boat sank.

When I asked him why, he replied, “Well, I’m not real sure, but the blizzard thing has something to do with less body surface and the drowning thing has something to do with fat floating.”

We’ve both decided it will probably be best if I avoid blizzards and he avoids large bodies of water.
