Shout Back…Will “Learn & Earn” Make Motivation Turn?
An article in the Atlanta Journal Constitution continues to peck my temples. I keep thinking…"You’ve got to be kidding!" But I’m always open to a new perspective, and if you can explain to me why this is a good idea, please do.

"Fulton County schools want to pay students to stay in school a little longer.
Fairburn will be the first to try the "Learn & Earn" program, where students will get paid to attend after-school tutoring programs.
Students will make approximately $8 an hour, and be eligible for bonuses if their grades improve, said Kirk Wilks, district spokesman. The initial students are in the eighth and 11th grades…
With the support of Fulton County Commissioner Robb Pitts, the pilot program will last 15 weeks and pay students for participation and performance. The object of the program is to determine if paying students to study will improve classroom attendance, grades and test scores, according to a news release from the district.
The initiative is funded by Charles Loudermilk, chairman and chief executive officer of Aaron Rents, through the Learning Makes A Difference Foundation. The foundation is a local non-profit designed to improve education through creative programs.
The students chosen for the program were picked by school staff, based on attendance, grades, test scores and free or reduced lunch status, the release said."

Oh this has funky stink all over it. What with the mindset of social promotion and the like still in place (don’t tell me it’s not - it is in a lot of schools - OK not ALL, but a lot of them…) how long until this is another waste of money. Where is this money coming from anyway? From Mr. Loudermilk? Does he want to adopt me?!? I’ll go to school for an extra $8 an hour - o.k. now I’m just being silly… but COME ON! Since when did learning in school have to be rewarded with cash? Is this what we teach our kids? “Please please do well - we’ll PAY you…” Give me a break. Next thing you know they’ll be paying the parents to make sure the kids do their homework! Holy %^& people, something you just have to do for their own sake to be decent, educated human beings! And while they are at it - could they please throw me a freaking bone and give me a freaking voucher so I can keep sending my child to private school? I’ll eat Top Raman gladly but I’d like at least a tax break while I exercise my free will and my right to school choice.
